Will Vanemar work on my boat?
You can use Vanemar on sailing boats, motorboats, fishing boats and commercial vessels. Choose your setup around what you want to keep an eye on: batteries, bilges, cabins, access points and onboard equipment.
For a small open boat, a Gateway may cover your starting needs. If you have several cabins or separate bilges, add sensors for each area you want to monitor.
Explore what you can monitor
How do I choose the right setup for my boat?
Start with the areas and equipment you want to monitor. Use a Vanemar Gateway as the center of your system, then choose sensors for your boat’s layout and your priorities.
Add a Water Sensor for each separate bilge area you want to monitor and a Battery Sensor for each additional battery you want to track. Choose other sensors for the doors, cabins and equipment that matter to you. If you want engine or tank data, check your boat’s NMEA 2000 compatibility before adding an adapter.
You can add more sensors later as your needs change. For remote monitoring, purchase your Vanemar Connect subscription separately. If you need help planning the setup, tell us about your boat and what you want to monitor.

Can I start with just the sensors?
You need a Vanemar Gateway to connect your sensors to the Vanemar app. It collects their readings and keeps your system connected.
If you already have a Gateway, buy the additional sensors you need. If this is your first Vanemar system, choose a Gateway and add the sensors that suit your boat.
See how sensors connect
Can I add more sensors later?
Yes. Start with the areas that matter most to you and add sensors as your needs change. A Vanemar Gateway supports up to 20 wireless sensors directly. Use a Smart Plug or a compatible VMBS2 Battery Sensor to extend wireless coverage, keeping the extender powered.
Check your Gateway model and planned setup with Support before expanding a larger installation. To bring in data from your boat’s NMEA 2000 network, add the NMEA 2000 Adapter.

Can I use onboard Wi-Fi or Starlink as a backup?
Yes, if you have a Vanemar Gateway 2. Connect it to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network from your onboard router or Starlink setup. The Gateway uses cellular as its primary connection and switches to the saved Wi-Fi network if cellular service is unavailable.
You still need an active Vanemar Connect subscription for remote services. Check your Gateway model before setting this up; Wi-Fi support does not apply to every Gateway.
Set up backup Wi-Fi
Does Vanemar work in my country?
Check your country in the coverage section on the Vanemar Connect page. Follow the link below and search for the country where you keep your boat or plan to travel. You can see the available mobile networks and supported connection technologies there.
Coverage can vary within a country, especially in bays and offshore areas. Remote monitoring requires an active Vanemar Connect subscription and a cellular connection where your boat is located.
Check coverage in your country
Can I use Vanemar abroad, and will I pay roaming charges?
Yes, you can use Connect on partner mobile networks in supported countries, with no extra roaming charges within Connect coverage.
Before travelling, check coverage for your destination with our support team. A supported country can still have bays and offshore areas without cellular signal, so consider your route as well as the country.
Check Connect coverage
What happens if my boat loses its internet connection?
If your Gateway cannot connect, it continues recording data and syncs it when the connection returns. You can still view the system through a local wireless connection when you are near the Gateway.
You will not receive live updates or immediate remote alerts while the boat is offline. If you use Gateway 2, set up a supported backup Wi-Fi connection before travelling beyond cellular coverage.
Explore the Gateway
Can I cancel my Connect subscription?
Yes. Manage your subscription in the Vanemar app and follow the cancellation steps. Check when the cancellation will take effect and what remains available during your current billing period.
Once the subscription ends, renew Connect to use remote monitoring and notifications again. If you are also returning hardware, arrange that separately through the returns process.

Where should I put the Water Sensor in the bilge?
Place the Water Sensor at the height where you want rising bilge water to trigger an alert. It detects contact with water, so choose a position that reflects the water level you need to know about.
Mount it with the supplied marine-grade adhesive, following the installation guide. Use a separate sensor in each bilge compartment you want to monitor. To measure a tank's changing level, you need a compatible tank sensor rather than a water-contact sensor.
Explore the Water Sensor
Why would I need a Battery Sensor if the Gateway already monitors a battery?
The Gateway monitors the voltage of the battery it is connected to. Add a Battery Sensor for each additional battery you want to see separately, such as your starter or service battery.
You can set voltage-alert thresholds for each battery in the app. The Battery Sensor takes power from the battery it monitors, so you do not need to replace a separate sensor battery. A compatible VMBS2 model can also extend wireless coverage when you enable its network-extender feature in the app.
Explore the Battery Sensor
How do I connect a Battery Sensor?
Follow the installation guide to connect the sensor to the battery terminals, checking the supported voltage and polarity first. Then scan the sensor's QR code in the Vanemar app to pair it with your Gateway.
Give the battery a clear name and set minimum and maximum voltage alerts if you want them. Choose thresholds that suit your battery type and electrical system, and use a separate sensor for each battery you want to monitor.
See Battery Sensor details
Where should I place the Motion Sensor, and when will it alert me?
Place the Motion Sensor in an interior area you want to monitor, such as a cabin or saloon. Follow its installation guide and leave a clear view of the area where movement should be detected.
Movement triggers an alert when your security system is armed. Use the app to arm the system when you leave and disarm it when you return.
Explore the Motion Sensor
How do I use the Entry Sensor on a door, window or hatch?
Fit the sensor and its magnet so they sit close together when the door, window or hatch is closed. When it opens, the two parts separate and the sensor reports the change to your Gateway.
Use it on the access points you want to monitor. Follow the mounting-gap instructions, then open and close the door or hatch to check that the app shows the correct status.
Explore the Entry Sensor
How will the Smoke Detector warn me, and where should I install it?
When the Smoke Detector detects smoke, it sounds an audible alarm on board and sends a notification through the Gateway. To receive that notification while you are away, keep Connect active and the Gateway online.
Use the installation guide to choose suitable positions in your cabins and other interior spaces. Check the operating limits before placing it near cooking equipment or in an engine room. Fit it with the supplied adhesive or screws, and add detectors for the separate areas you want to cover.
Explore the Smoke Detector
Do I need a carbon monoxide detector as well as a smoke detector?
They detect different hazards. Use a Smoke Detector to detect smoke and a compatible Carbon Monoxide Detector to monitor CO. Do not assume your smoke detector covers both.
Choose the detectors your boat needs and follow each device’s installation and testing instructions. With compatible detectors connected to Vanemar, smoke and CO are separate critical alert types. Remote alerts need an active Connect subscription and a working connection.
See which safety alerts stay active
Where can I use the Temperature and Humidity Sensor?
Use it in cabins and other interior spaces where you want to keep an eye on temperature and humidity. Add a sensor to each area you want to track separately.
Check current readings in the app or select a date to see how conditions have changed. Follow the placement guide so the readings reflect the area you want to measure.
Explore the Temperature and Humidity Sensor
Can I control appliances and check shore power with the Smart Plug?
You can switch an appliance connected to the Vanemar Smart Plug on or off from the app. Choose the correct plug type for your boat and check that your appliance is within its power limits.
To use it for shore-power alerts, plug it into a socket powered only by shore power and enable Notify When Device Goes Offline. The alert relies on the Smart Plug losing power and going offline. If an inverter or generator keeps that socket powered, disconnecting shore power will not produce that alert.

Engines, tanks and existing onboard systems.
What does the NMEA 2000 Adapter do?
The adapter connects your boat's NMEA 2000 network to Vanemar. It reads supported data from the equipment on that network and sends it wirelessly to your Gateway, so you can see it in the app.
Use it to bring compatible engine, tank, battery, wind and depth readings into the same place as your other boat information.
Explore the NMEA 2000 Adapter
Which engine, tank and instrument readings can I see?
Depending on your onboard equipment, you can see readings such as engine RPM and hours, fuel and other tank levels, battery voltage and charging information, wind speed, water depth and digital switching data.
Your equipment must send the relevant information to the NMEA 2000 network. For example, to see a tank level, you need a compatible tank sensor that supplies that reading. Check your equipment with our support team if you are planning around a particular measurement.
See supported NMEA 2000 data
How can I tell if my boat has an NMEA 2000 network?
Check your boat's equipment manuals or electrical diagram for NMEA 2000 connections. You may find a network backbone with T-connectors linking equipment such as engine displays and chartplotters.
If you are unsure, send our support team the equipment models and photos of the connections, or ask your marine electrician. Confirm compatibility before ordering the adapter.
Check adapter compatibility
How do I install the NMEA 2000 Adapter?
Follow the installation guide to connect the adapter to your boat's existing NMEA 2000 network using the supplied connection cable and T-connector. It takes power from that network, so it does not need a separate power connection.
The adapter sends data wirelessly to your Gateway. Once connected, complete the setup in the Vanemar app and check that your equipment readings appear.
See adapter installation details
Can I control lights or other circuits from my phone?
Yes, if your boat has a compatible digital switching system on its NMEA 2000 network. Connect the Vanemar NMEA 2000 Adapter to bring supported switches into the app, then use them to control the connected circuits.
You need a Gateway, the adapter and compatible switching equipment aboard. You can enable biometric authentication for an extra check before a switching command. Review the circuit labels and setup with your installer before using remote controls.
Set up digital switches
Can I choose when to receive tank-level warnings?
Yes. With a compatible tank-level source on your NMEA 2000 network and the Vanemar adapter, set a minimum or maximum warning level for each tank in the app.
For example, set a low-level warning for fuel or fresh water and a high-level warning for a waste tank. Choose thresholds that give you time to act and check that each tank is named correctly.
Set tank warning levels
Can I see AC voltage, current and power in the app?
Yes, when compatible equipment supplies those measurements over NMEA 2000. With the Vanemar adapter, you can view available AC input and output data, including voltage, current, frequency and power.
The readings you see depend on your onboard equipment and software compatibility. A Smart Plug shore-power alert detects a loss of the plug’s connection; use a compatible NMEA data source when you need electrical measurements.

Security, notifications and everyday use.
How do I arm and disarm my boat's security system?
Use the Vanemar app to arm your boat's security system when you leave and disarm it when you return. For example, the Motion Sensor sends movement alerts while the system is armed.
Before leaving, check the security status in the app and make sure the relevant sensors are connected. Disarm the system when you or your crew are back on board.
Explore security features
Will safety alerts still work while I am aboard?
Yes. Switch to Onboard mode when you are using the boat. This stops normal movement and door activity from triggering intrusion alarms.
Critical monitoring, such as smoke, carbon monoxide, high bilge water and battery alerts, remains active according to your installed devices and settings. Check those settings when you set up the system, and switch back to Armed mode when you leave.
Understand security modes
How do I set a geofence around my boat?
Use geofence protection to receive an alert if your boat moves outside the boundary you set. Check that the app shows the boat’s current position, then adjust the radius to suit its berth or anchorage.
Allow room for normal movement around a mooring or anchor. Review the boundary and security mode when you leave the boat so that protection matches where you are.
Set up geofence protection
Why am I getting geofence alerts while my boat is still at its berth?
First, check the position shown in the app. A restricted view of the sky or nearby metal can affect GPS reception. Follow the antenna placement guide and check its connection.
If the position looks right, review your geofence radius. A radius that is too small can trigger alerts during normal movement around a mooring. Allow for that movement, then test the new setting before leaving the boat.
Troubleshoot geofence alerts
Will Vanemar call me if I miss an important alert?
For critical alerts, Vanemar sends an app notification and starts an automatic phone call if the alert has not been seen within 60 seconds.
Keep your Connect subscription active and check your contact and notification settings during setup. The Gateway needs a working connection to send the alert.
See how critical alerts work
Can I choose which notifications I receive?
Yes. Open Notification Settings in the Vanemar app and choose the updates you want. You can manage alerts, connection status, power and battery updates, sensor connections, temperature, humidity, tank levels and engine notifications separately.
Review these settings after adding equipment so the notifications match what you want to monitor.
Read the notification guide
Can I use the same notification preferences for more than one boat?
Yes. In Notification Settings, choose All Boats to apply a preference to every boat in your account, including boats you add later.
If you want it to apply only to certain boats, choose Selected Boats and select those boats.
Manage notifications across your boats
Will muting alerts stop a sensor from monitoring?
No. Muting alerts pauses new notifications; the sensor keeps monitoring and any existing alarm state remains visible. Use this when you are already dealing with an issue or carrying out maintenance.
Choose a set time or mute alerts until you turn them back on. If you choose a time limit, notifications resume automatically when it ends.
See how to mute alerts
What should I check if I am not receiving notifications?
- Check that your Gateway is online and Connect is active.
- Allow notifications from Vanemar in your phone's settings.
- Make sure the notification you expect is enabled in the app.
- Check whether alerts from the sensor are muted.
- For entry or motion alerts, check that the security system is armed.
If you still do not receive the alert, check our service status and contact support with the sensor name, event and time it happened.
Check notification settings
Can Vanemar alerts appear on my chartplotter?
Yes, with a compatible multifunction display and a Vanemar NMEA 2000 Adapter. Enable forwarding in the app to send supported alarms and warnings to the display.
You can choose alarm and warning types separately. Check display compatibility and test the settings aboard before relying on them during a trip.
Set up chartplotter alerts
Can I review previous trips, alerts and sensor readings?
Yes. With Connect, look back at your boat’s location, journeys, recorded alerts and available sensor readings in the Vanemar app. If you use the NMEA 2000 Adapter, you can also review the history of supported engine, tank and battery measurements.
Choose a date or period to see what happened and how readings changed. The history depends on what your installed sensors and onboard equipment recorded.

Invite people you trust, manage their access and transfer ownership.
How do I invite someone to access my boat?
Open Boat Settings → Users, choose Add User or the + button, enter their email address and send the invitation.
They do not need an account before you invite them. Ask them to sign in or register with the same email address and accept the invitation. A pending invitation does not give access until it is accepted.
Invite someone to your boat
I received an invitation. How do I add the boat to my account?
Sign in to the Vanemar app using the email address that received the invitation. If you are new to Vanemar, create your account with that address first.
Open the invitation notification, or find the boat marked Waiting for acceptance in Settings, then choose Accept. If you cannot see it, check which email address the owner used and ask them to resend the invitation if needed.
Accept a boat invitation
Can I remove someone’s access later?
Yes. As the boat owner, open Boat Settings → Users and select the person. Choose Revoke Access to remove an accepted user, or Cancel Invitation if the invitation is still pending.
This changes access for that person only. Review the list when your captain, crew or other people looking after the boat change.
Manage access to your boat
Can I transfer Vanemar to the person who buys my boat?
Yes. As the current owner, open Boat Settings → Transfer Boat, enter the buyer’s email address, choose whether to include history and send the request. They can accept ownership without reinstalling the existing system.
Once they accept, access is removed for you and all previously added users. Existing Connect and other boat subscriptions are cancelled, so the new owner needs to arrange their own subscription and invite their users. A pending transfer expires after 30 days; you can cancel or resend it before acceptance.
Transfer your boat to a new owner
What happens to my recorded data when I transfer the boat?
Choose Include History if you want the new owner to receive the boat’s recorded data, such as location, battery, temperature and humidity history.
If you turn this option off, the previous history is permanently deleted when the transfer is completed. You cannot undo that deletion, so review your choice before sending the transfer request.

Is Vanemar Fleet right for my business?
If you run a charter company, fishing fleet or workboat operation, Vanemar Fleet helps you keep track of your boats and make daily operating decisions from one place.
Choose shared access when your family or captain needs to keep an eye on your boat. Consider Fleet when you need to coordinate a business: decide where your team is needed, prepare boats for their next job and use operating data to improve costs and availability.
Explore commercial fleet management
Can I manage my commercial fleet from one place?
Yes. Use Vanemar Fleet Management to follow your vessels and manage crew access from one dashboard on mobile or desktop, including boats operating from different bases. You can add as many boats and crew members as your operation needs.
Plan a Gateway and the right monitoring equipment for each vessel, then contact our team to discuss fleet setup and subscriptions. Your dashboard brings together location, vessel status and the operating data available from each boat.
Explore commercial fleet management
Can my operations team manage the fleet together?
Yes. Add the people who look after your fleet so they can work from the same view of your boats. Agree who checks alerts, who contacts the crew and who arranges maintenance.
Keep the user list current when staff responsibilities change. Before rollout, discuss your team’s access needs with us so the setup fits the way you operate.
Plan your team’s fleet setup
Can I set permitted and restricted areas for charter boats?
Yes. Create the permitted and restricted areas you need in Fleet Management and receive alerts when a vessel crosses a boundary.
Use these alerts to follow up with your skipper or crew when a boat leaves its permitted area or enters a restricted one. They help you monitor operations but do not control the vessel's movement.
Explore fleet operating areas
How can Vanemar help with charter changeovers?
Before the next handover, review the boat’s available battery, bilge, shore-power and other status data. Use recent alerts and journey information to decide which checks your turnaround team should tackle first.
This helps you prepare for a problem before the next guest arrives and reduce avoidable delays. Keep your physical handover and safety checks as part of the routine.
Explore Fleet for charter operations
Can we start with a few boats before equipping the whole fleet?
Yes. Start with a small group that represents your boat types, engines and operating bases. Choose the questions you want the trial to answer, such as where fuel is being wasted or how quickly your team can respond to alerts.
Check installation, coverage and data quality, then agree a practical routine with the staff using it. Use what you learn to plan the rest of the fleet and any additional sensors or NMEA connections.
Discuss a fleet pilotFuel, maintenance and efficiency
Reduce fuel waste, plan engine care and make better use of your fleet.
How can Vanemar help us reduce fuel costs?
See where the fuel is going before deciding what to change. Review consumption alongside journeys, speed, engine RPM and time spent operating. You can then spot avoidable running time, compare cruising habits and investigate boats that use more fuel than expected.
Use those findings to adjust operating routines and brief your crews. The savings depend on how your fleet is used and the changes you make; fuel analysis requires compatible onboard fuel data.
Explore fuel and operating statistics
Should I compare fuel use per hour or per nautical mile?
Litres per hour (L/h) helps you understand how quickly fuel is being used while operating. Litres per nautical mile (L/nm) helps you compare how much fuel it takes to cover a distance.
Use both where compatible data is available. A lower hourly burn does not necessarily mean a more economical journey if the boat covers much less distance. Compare similar operating conditions and review the whole trip before drawing a conclusion.
Understand fuel efficiency data
Can I find boats spending too much time with their engines running?
Review engine use alongside journey time, position, speed and available fuel readings. Look for periods when an engine is running but the boat is making little progress, then check the reason with the crew.
Some running time is necessary for manoeuvring or the job aboard. Focus on avoidable waiting and operating habits you can change safely. A stationary position on its own does not prove that an engine was idling.
Review engine use and journeys
Can Vanemar show the most efficient cruising range for each boat?
When enough compatible engine, speed and fuel data is available, Vanemar Smart Data uses the boat’s own operating history to identify efficient cruising ranges. Review RPM, speed and fuel per nautical mile together to see where that boat tends to run efficiently.
You can also see how much operating time falls into efficient, transition or high-consumption ranges. Use this to brief your crew while allowing for weather, load, sea conditions and safe navigation.
Explore boat-specific Smart Data
How do I compare fuel consumption fairly across boats?
Start with boats doing similar work. Compare the route, distance, engine hours, speed and fuel use, and account for differences in load, weather and sea conditions. Where enough data exists, Smart Data can also compare boats using the same engine model and flag unusual consumption.
Check an outlier before deciding what caused it. Hull condition, operating habits and mechanical issues can all affect consumption; a higher figure alone does not identify the cause.
Compare fleet performance
How can Vanemar help lower engine maintenance costs?
Use available engine readings, alerts and changes in performance to spot issues that deserve attention early. A boat consuming more fuel than usual or showing unusual engine data gives your team a reason to check it before the problem disrupts operations.
Timely checks can help reduce avoidable damage, urgent repairs and downtime. Smart Data helps you decide which boat to inspect first; it does not diagnose faults or replace the engine manufacturer’s service procedures.
See engine and performance insights
Can we use engine hours to plan servicing?
Yes, when your connected engine system provides engine-hour data. Review the hours for each boat and compare them with its last service record and the manufacturer’s time- and hour-based service intervals.
Plan the work around bookings or quieter operating periods where possible. Keep a service record and follow the required maintenance schedule even when the boat’s readings look normal.
Review engine hours and usage
How can we make better use of the boats we already have?
Compare engine hours, journey time, distance and operating periods across your fleet. Look for boats carrying most of the workload and others that are used less often.
Use that picture when assigning boats, planning staff coverage and scheduling maintenance. Balance the workload where it makes sense for each boat’s capacity and role, so you can get more value from the fleet and avoid unnecessary downtime.
Compare boat use across your fleet
How can journey history and heatmaps help improve our routes?
Use journey history to review the route, duration and distance of completed trips. Heatmaps help you see frequently used areas and places where boats spend time.
Discuss repeated detours, long waits or busy locations with your crews. Use what you learn to adjust schedules, departure routines or routes where appropriate. You make the operating decisions; the data helps you see where to look.
Explore journeys and heatmaps
Why are some statistics or Smart Data insights missing?
Each result depends on the data available from that boat. Fuel analysis needs compatible fuel readings; efficient cruising analysis also needs enough useful engine and speed history. A new installation or incomplete data may not yet support a meaningful result.
Check the connected equipment, NMEA sources and connection status. Allow enough representative journeys to build a history, and ask Support to review the setup if expected readings are still missing.
Check the data behind each insight
How do we measure the savings for our own business?
Record a baseline before changing your operating routine. Compare similar periods using fuel per journey or distance, engine hours, maintenance spending and time out of service. Note changes in workload, fuel prices, weather and boat condition so the comparison is fair.
After you act on the data, review the same measures again. Combine the Vanemar figures with your own fuel invoices and service records to see what has improved and where to focus next. There is no single savings percentage or payback period that fits every fleet.

How long do sensor batteries last, and when should I replace them?
Battery life depends on the sensor and how it is used. As a guide, expect around 2 years for the Motion Sensor, up to 3 years for the Entry Sensor and up to 5 years for the Smoke Detector.
Watch for low-battery alerts in the app and use the battery type listed in the sensor's manual. The Smoke Detector also gives an audible low-battery warning. Your Battery Sensor takes power from the boat battery it monitors, so it has no separate battery to replace.
Check Smoke Detector specifications
How should I maintain and test my system?
Test your Smoke Detector monthly with its test button. Check for low-battery alerts and disconnected sensors in the app, and follow the care instructions for each device.
After moving equipment or changing your boat's wiring, check the affected sensors and readings again. If you use the NMEA 2000 Adapter, confirm that your connected equipment is still sending data to the app.
See Smoke Detector care details
What should I check if a sensor goes offline?
First, check whether the Gateway is online. If all sensors appear unavailable, start with the Gateway’s power and connection. If only one sensor is affected, check its battery or power supply and whether anything has changed around its position.
Metal partitions and distance can affect the wireless connection. Follow that sensor’s troubleshooting guide and contact Support with its name, model and the time the connection was lost if it does not reconnect.

Once your return arrives, we will inspect it and let you know whether your refund is approved. Approved refunds are sent to your original payment method within 10 business days. Your bank or card provider may take longer to show the payment.
If more than 30 business days have passed since approval, email sales@vanemar.com so we can help.
